Big Tree SINGS – Radio Bean – 7.10.09

July 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I get a lot of rides from friends given that I haven’t had a car in quite a few years & someone just stole my bike?!?!. A big perk of my friends being so nice is that, well, I get to and from work a hell of a lot faster & I get to hear what they are digging tune wise on that given day/ week.

That is how I stumbled onto the Brooklyn based Indie Folk crew of BIG TREE. My buddy CHRIS saved me from a watery walk home one day and threw these guys on. Fresh off a gig at the Monkey, CHRIS ganked their record/ loved it and shared.

Now we share a bit.

BIG TREE

“Big Tree… absolutely blew me away. Their sound was something of Explosions in the Sky / Broken Social Scene / Most Serene Republic. Epic post-rock elements mixed with proper rock and jazz and killer duet singing from excellent female fronted vocalists. They have a west coast summer tour on the horizon and I highly recommend going to see these guys. They really captured the intimacy of the venue and were one of the tightest bands I’ve seen in a long time. .”

Kevin Barker w/ Happy Birthday and Paper Castles (solo)

July 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Sunday July 12th 2009

Kevin Barker

W/ HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND PAPER CASTLES (Solo)

9pm/ $7 / 21+

So,  a little info on this:

KEVIN BARKER

You may know Kevin Barker from such post as the last post on this blog, but you may also know him from his super awesome guitar work on the last 3 full length Vetiver albums.  Or you may even know him in person from his performance at the Bakery with Andy Cabic and Otto Hausen of Vetiver last fall.  You also might not know him at all, which is why we’re here:

Kevin Barker lives in Brooklyn, made a movie called THE FAMILY JAMS (see last post), and is a bad ass guitarist.  Those are the facts as I know them.  Though Kevin often plays with a trio (including Hausen on drums), he’ll be playing solo this Sunday at the Monkey.  The songs he plays are reminiscent of the laid backedness of Vetiver, but with his guitar work at the forefront the vibe is decidedly more Deadish.  The songs themselves are nicely written with some really strong lyrical content.  It will be interesting to hear his solo work.

//HAPPY BIRTHDAY//

Happy Birthday doesn’t have any music recorded yet, so I can’t give you an idea of what it might sound like, but I can do my best to hype the band, SO, here goes:

The Band is

Kyle Thomas (Guitar/Vocals)

Ruth Garbus (Drums/Vocals)

and Chris Weisman (Inverted Guitar/Vocals)

Kyle Thomas plays in a band called WITCH, with J Mascis of Dinasour Jr.

Kyle and Ruth were in a band called Feathers, which I believe is no longer a band, but released an album on Gnomonsong.  Gnomonsong is the record label started by Andy Cabic (Vetiver) and Devandre Banhart, home to Papercuts, Vetiver’s Thing of the Past album, and a number of Michael Hurly reissues.

Chris just finished an album/supporting tour with Greg Davis.  The disc is really cool and the show was equally cool.

I get the sense that Happy Birthday doesn’t sound a ton like either Ruth or Chris’ solo work, but check these links, because they are both great:

Chris Weisman

Ruth Garbus

//PAPER CASTLES//

This is me.  I’ll be opening the show.  Lucky guy.

July 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

more about “The Family Jams: a film by Kevin Barker“, posted with vodpod
This is just a bit of a precursor to the coming post about Kevin Barker’s performance next Sunday at the Monkey House.
The Family Jams is a documentary filmed by Kevin Barker in 2004, chronicaling a tour with Devandre Banhart, Vetiver, and Joanna Newsome.
I personally am really excited to find out what the deal is with the finished product  because it seems like its going to be awesome.
Anyway, stay tuned for more Kevin Barker info….

Angioplasty Video begins…

Angioplasty Video – Episode 1

CHRISS SUTHERLAND – “Grumblin’”

So, this is the first video that we’ve done ourselves here at Angioplasty Media.

If you’re familiar with website’s like Daytrotter.com ,they do brief sessions with traveling musicians and post them on their site for the world to see.  Daytrotter.com does strictly audio accompanied by a nice stylistic portrait of the artists.  It’s pretty cool.

Anyway, there are other outlets such as Irelands BalconyTV.com that do brief video sessions with artists.

It’s a really nice way of getting another look at the people we love to listen to; especially when we’ve got a cool space to do it in.

So, we decided, “What the hay! We know a ton of musicians and are getting to know more and more every day, so let’s do it ourselves, in a Burlington sorta way!”

Then we broke into song….

And when we came to, our first video was finished!

//CHRIS SUTHERLAND//

Chriss if from South Portland, ME.  You may know him from his previous work with Cerberous Shoal and his current band Fire On Fire.

Thanks to Brett Hughes for the camera!

A Transmittens “Glitterstorm” 6.28.09 Tonight!

June 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So many shows! So much to do! hold me? Tighter Drum Machine. .

TRANSMITTENS

Lawrence, Kansas popsters TRANSMITTENS will be finishing up their June run of gigs tonight at the Monkey House with Burlingtons own/ and Wee Pop Label Mates  LET’s WHISPER.

“the duo has written a charming body of songs built around drum machines, synthesizers and choruses that will get stuck in your head for weeks. Their lyrics about hot dog suits, cow clouds and sparklemittens are hardly the too-cute variety of less capable twee-pop acts, but rather the artfully charming sort that The Magnetic Fields or The Field Mice might publish. “  — Lawrence.com
