Trevor Wilson + Jackson Emmer – 11.14.09 – Radio Bean

Needs to find me a job where I don’t need to work nights. SADLY Missed their Record ‘co operative’ – mates in crime - MOUNTAIN MAN ( hearted them ) – a few months back in June 09′ and it looks as though I’ll unfortunately be missing these folks as well.

Glad this one pulled through.

A multi -hour coffee shop session of emails reminded me that I didn’t make room for these guys on Saturday. Just so happens an out of stater came down with the SICK and had to cancel.

Lovely that it worked out.

Some genuine tunes  from Trevor Wilson and Jackson Emmer out of the Bennington/ Brattleboro/ West Coast Stylee/ NYC collective know as OPEN FACE RECORDS

TREVOR WILSON

Songwriter Trevor Wilson has a shrill voice, almost a banshee squeal, as surreal as it is smooth. In the past, it has been layered over piano, and is currently sitting on top of the tense and fragile plucks of the ukulele. Trevor was the frontman of former group Tall Ships.

Jackson Emmer

Jackson Emmer wears a bold pair of shoulders and passes sound through a throat that can be as coarse as tender. Coming from a long tradition of genuine and perhaps a little absurd american poet/string players, Jackson is ready to give America a spicier taste of itself.

Weaving together natural history and biography, A LIFE AMONG WHALES is a fascinating exploration into the life and work of whale biologist and activist Roger Payne. Payne’s electrifying discovery in the early 1970s that whales sing “songs” helped ignite the modern day environmental movement.

A charismatic and passionate individual, Payne’s pioneering spirit has consistently advanced the boundaries of science and activism over the last four decades.

A LIFE AMONG WHALES traces Payne’s scientific research beginning with his early work in Patagonia, where for two years, he, his wife and four young children lived in tents on a remote bay so that they could have unhindered access for the study of Southern Right Whales.

It explores Payne’s tireless and passionate fight to ban whaling — a ban which today, 20 years after an international moratorium was imposed is threatened — and follows him to his present day study of ocean pollution and his work with The Ocean Alliance, a non-profit organization and global leader in whale research and conservation which he founded.

With beautiful and haunting images, Payne challenges us to become the greatest generation of all. Saving earth’s largest creatures would open the door to humanity’s recognition of our true role in the biosphere.

PC Worship w. Villanelles & Power Owl – 11.06.09 – The Monkey House

Godddamn. Another good one to report. 2 locals and an out of stater that sounds great.

PC Worship are on SHDWPLY which is home to SORE EROS! ( rocked the bean ) and TEETH MOUNTAIN      ( Monkey House y HIgher Ground w. D. Deacon and crew ).

Local favorites VILLANELLES as well as OWL POWER out of Middlebury round out the bill!

//// //// ////

PC WORSHIP

“PC Worship have a more ragged, basement appeal than much of the Shdwply catalogue, with a crude, DIY psych edge that feels closer to the homemade aesthetic of the early Twisted Village sides than the glazed psych-pop most associated with this amazing label. NYC Stone Age feels like a collection of tracks put together over a period of time and it veers into a bunch of mutually fucked zones: there are some honking brass-led jazz breakdowns that match Joshua Burkett-era Vermonster in terms of excessively-damaged free-rock motion, the kind of claustrophobic private basement psych that would erect temples around Vulcan’s Meet Your Ghost LP and some zoned pop/drone songs. Another great one from a label that can pretty much do no wrong.” -Vocanic Tounge

You Can Be A Wesley! & Husbands AKA – 11.07.09 – Muddy Waters

Man I like You Can Be A Wesley. I often wake with their songs already playing in my head.

Rolling into town on the 7th to play a rocker with HUSBANDS AKA & Patrick Brownson at Muddy Waters, a night before they hit up EAT YOUR HEART OUT BOSTON @ Church supporting DEERTICK.

Have seen them at the Monkey House two times prior, hope the downtown location treats them well and they get some randoms in off the street.

//// //// ////

YOU CAN BE A WESLEY

The warm, vintage sounds on Boston-based quartet You Can Be A Wesley’s debut full-length were recorded straight to two-inch tape last summer by Jeremy Mendicino of fellow Beantown locals (and Hardly Art signees) Pretty And Nice.

Heard Like Us presents the ideal feel-good summertime soundtrack.

Though poppy hooks, whimsical imagery, handclaps and tambourines shimmer throughout, the record is not overly sweet. It features Joanna Newsome-esque vocals and memorable sing-along choruses while also presenting clear rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities. Straightforward, repetitive guitar riffs, Pixies-inspired bass lines and aggressive drum beats see-saw perfectly against the lighter, lovable notes, all of which are wrapped up in a surfy analog haze – Liz Pelly – CMJ Review

Mumlers & The Fishermen Three w. Osage Orange – 11.05.09 – The Monkey House

A surprising # of great shows this week. I’m all out of order with whats happening where on what day but I’ll at least get the finer points out there so folks can find the goods. Sorting it out as I go.  The Mumlers are an act out of San Jose who just hopped off a  tour with the Black Heart Procession. The Fishermen Three are a Berkley/ Brooklyn based act that recently toured the UK with  Jeffrey Lewis and his band. These two acts are pairing up for a few shows in New England , with Burlington’s own OSAGE ORANGE along for the Monkey House gig.
