Mike Donofrio, bassist for The New Year & VT resident will be celebrating his Birthday this week in grand fashion.
Holding what looks to be Vermont’s first
ROCK LOTTERY
Here’s the gist, straight from Mike:
“Friday, May 22 will mark the beginning of my fifth decade on earth. A perfectly good excuse for some fun.
So here’s what I propose: join me at the Lamb Abbey here in Montpelier
for Vermont’s first (as far as I can tell) Rock Lottery.
Let me explain:
Years ago, a friend from Denton, TX told me about the Rock Lottery, a Denton institution (now expanded to Seattle) since about 1997. The idea is simple, and summed up by the slogan on the Rock Lottery’s myspace page:
*10 AM–25 musicians; 10 PM–5 new bands.*
A group of musicians is assembled, gets randomly split up into bands, spends a little time creating, and gets together at a local venue to show off their wares. The idea struck me as brilliant, and when I moved here to Montpelier and quickly saw how many creative, fun musicians reside in the area, I thought this would be a great place to try it out. When the Lamb Abbey opened, it seemed the perfect venue.
And finally when it dawned on me that I was turning 40 and needed to do something memorable to mark the occasion, I kind of put 2 and 2 together.
In this case, we’ll be giving the bands a week to get their music together–the randomly selected bands will be informed on May 15, and their music will be revealed to the world at the Lamb Abbey on
Friday, May 22, starting at 8 pm.
The event is open to all, and the Lamb Abbey’s usual donation and BYO policies will apply.
And please spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested. I hope the Rock Lottery concept will catch on and we can make it a regular event.
